Leather Works by John C. Roberts is 22 years old this summer. We are located in Indian Brook, Victoria County, on the world-famous Cabot Trail. Our shop is in the front room of a 4-room workshop, where all our products are made. Most days, John welcomes youngsters and oldsters alike to come back and learn a bit about leather.

Hand-sewing leather fire buckets is our main winter work. April to December, we make belts, bags, wallets, dog collars, moulded leather flower bags, and many other items that you can find on our complete product listing page.

Our web site is open year round. Our shop is open from April through November. If you plan to visit Cape Breton and the Cabot Trail, come see us!

John C. Roberts

John is a Master Artisan in the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council. He learned his craft through experience in harness shops and leather factories, self-teaching, and museum research.

A natural outcome of John's interest in craftsmanship and history was his first commission, from Fortress Louisbourg National Historic Park in 1975, to make leather fire buckets. In 2003, our buckets were featured in the movie Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, starring Russell Crowe.

Stories about John have been featured on CBC's Land and Sea, in Canadian House and Home Magazine, on the TV show The Leading Edge, and in Robin Metcalfe's book Studio Rally.

John and his wife Marion opened Leather Works by John C. Roberts in 1988 to retail a wide variety of leather goods, including museum reproductions and contemporary accessories. All leather items sold in the store are made in the adjoining workshop by John and a skilled staff working together, fueled by coffee and chocolate.
