Powder Buckets were used in the 18th and 19th centuries to carry a cartridge from a powder magazine to a cannon. The cartridge was a cloth bag containing a measured amount of gun powder. The cannon balls were stacked next to the cannon. This cartridge case is a reproduction of an artifact from the 19th century, used by British artillerymen. Like the original, it has been hand-stitched using linen thread on the handle and copper wire on the bucket and lid. After being made, the cartridge case is hardened using a centuries old method called "cuir bouilli" (soaking the bucket in hot water and then baking it in an oven.) The handle is then sewn on to finish the bucket.
