Gargoussier

Gargoussiers were used in the 18th and 19th centuries to carry a cartridge from a powder magazine to a cannon. The cartridge was a cloth bag containing a measured amount of gun powder. The cannon balls were stacked next to the cannon.

This gargoussier is a reproduction of an artifact from the
18th century, used by French artillerymen at Fortress Louisbourg. Like the original, it has been hand-stitched using linen thread. After being made, the cartridge case is hardened using a centuries- old method called "Cuir Bouilli" (soaking the bucket in hot water and then baking it in an oven.)

13 1/2" high x 4 1/2" diameter
