This bucket is a reproduction of an artifact used by the North-West Mounted Police in western Canada in the late nineteenth century. Pieces of field artillery were equipped with one of these buckets holding water to wet a sponge. This sponge was pushed down the cannon barrel to quench any sparks left from a previous firing, preventing premature ignition of the new powder charge. 10
